Today I will try to live through this day only, and not tackle my whole life problem at once. I can do something for twelve hours that would appal me if I felt I had to keep it up for a lifetime.
You know P&S - it could be Russia has become "exhausted" with playing chicken with those who seems intent on trying to intimidate the Russian bear. That is no doubt a "fools-game" and the Baltic States could easily be subsumed against their will if need be I reckon - cause a bear must defend the homeland.
~
its like a "Mexican Standoff" - and onE vehicle is an ole VW bug (the "West") - and the other is a tank (Russia). I remember my friends dad when two cars were trying to go to the same place but then neither could get there - it was a game of "chicken" as to who would back down first in the Mexican Standoff - (ha, ha.....)....
That is hardly a "Standoff" from the perspective of the tank - and patience only lasts so long - cause it could be the Russian geopolitical intellectual can read the writing on the wall - and truly - what does a bully respond to? Sweet talk don't do the trick....
The origin, according to the following source the expression is just one of the many along the line of similar AmE slang expressions that use the term Mexican as a slur:
Several sources I have found suggest that the “Mexican” modifier in the phrase refers to a supposed proclivity of 19th century Mexican “bandits” for running away from a fair fight. But the first example of “Mexican standoff” found so far in print used the phrase to describe a baseball game ending in a tie, and subsequent uses employ the term as a simple synonym of “stalemate” with nary an actual Mexican in sight.
The “Mexican” in “Mexican standoff” is thus almost certainly just another entry in the long and shameful roster of US slang terms employing “Mexican” as a slur meaning “fraudulent, inferior, or marked by poverty, poor sanitation, lack of sophistication or ignorance.”
Such formations as “Mexican bankroll” (one large denomination bill wrapped around a roll of smaller bills), “Mexican athlete” (a phony braggart) and “Mexican breakfast” (a cigarette and a glass of water) all reflect the same derogatory national rivalry. A “Mexican standoff,” in this light, is called “Mexican” because it is pointless, inconclusive and unproductive, not because it has any actual connection to Mexico.
(The Word Detective)
Early usage examples:
1876 March 19, F. Harvey Smith, “Mexican Stand-Off”, in Sunday Mercury, New York, page 2/col. 5:
“Go-!” said he sternly then. “We will call it a stand-off, a Mexican stand-off, you lose your money, but you save your life!”
Thanks Ken, much of these American expressions I knew not of - so once again you have educated me FOC! One tribe will always denegrate others who appear to be inferior. In UK we have the Irish to knock as being dim, unfairly, they are a brilliant nation: https://faithit.com/traditional-irish-sayings/
And many Americans claim alliegance due to the 19th century potato famine and subsequent escape to the New World. JFK had Irish heritage and what a peacemaker he was and paid the price. The warmongers are generally Anglo/Saxons.
Thank you, AP. – a wonderful collection of many of my nightmares!
I am tempted to ramble on about many of these topics – so interesting - but there is little point as I have little useful insight.
Nevertheless, looking at our global politicians – what a shower! Not scary - other than that we know they are not calling the shots - but risible. We are not yet hungry enough in the UK to mount a serious uprising. Obviously, the race is on between installing the tech to identify and control any leaders and the reality of our dire situation reaching a sufficient number of fit citizens.
The good news is – it didn’t rain on the Chelsea Flower Show! So, all’s well in the world!
Thank you again for all your dedicated exertions. Wishing you a wonderful week, AP. xxx
As always Zara, thank you for your kind words. A reader on LinkedIn commented, and here is my reply giving my take on where we might be going, it's not like 1938 today, too many people are well informed: FYI

Hey Peter .
Regarding your last article:
AFAIK young people in Europe are not that fond of being conscripted and a fraction of them would actually sign a contract to participate in this out of their own will.
And there are at least a few million people over here who participated in modern conflict either in the frontline or in military industrial complex production chains, and many of them made that as a conscious choice(not to mention that many are in debt and its the only prospect they have, so it becomes and existential fight for them ).
I hope that the global conflict will be avoided and everything returns back as it was prior to 2014.
it's all nice when its just strategic analysis, but when shit hits the fan millions will be mobilised and six feet under on both sides in a short span.
I hope that this never happens since I want to die of natural causes, and not in a trench with an ak in my hands because some assholes in high cabinets decided that a war is needed.(Edited)

Thank you, AP. The additional insights are most appreciated.
I sincerely hope the young can avoid conflict, however much they are coerced. I try to remember that our war-mongering, tunnel-visioned bankers, etc are, by definition, limited in their abilities whereas the more morally advantaged and insightful have access to a choice of pathways.
Thanks AP most informative

The banksters need a war, Roman following the historical pattern when economies begin to fail. It's the standard banksters response. The history of the BIS here gives away all the clues to their strategy: https://www.amazon.com/Tower-Basel-Shadowy-History-Secret/dp/1610393813
My article here explains why Ukraine is the focal pivot of the next war, which will be fought along the lines of Vigilant Shield: https://www.theburningplatform.com/2025/01/04/the-financial-jigsaw-part-2-36-the-heartland-theory-operation-vigilant-shield-ww3-sitrep-syria-and-belarus-uk-snowbound-01-04-25/
My guess is that GenZ/Millennials won't join in - then it's civil protests/possible martial law and all hell breaks out. People are too well informed this time around. The people can always withdraw consent if they have a mind to: https://austrianpeter.substack.com/p/the-financial-jigsaw-part-2-special-36e?utm_source=substack&utm_medium=email
Best wishes and so pleased your summer has arrived, well, for a while anyway!
