UKRAINE SITREP - The war in Ukraine continues to grind on and Ukrainian troops are falling back all across the 600-mile front. It’s not a good start to the New Year for Zelensky and the future is bleak at best. Russia is methodically destroying Ukrainian factories set up to manufacture military tactical clothing, ammunition, drones, and vehicles. Repair facilities also have been hit and obliterated—Ditto for military training facilities (aka bases).

Ukraine’s recent use of cluster munitions in Belgorod and Donetsk killed a few civilians but enraged Putin and his military commanders.  In response, Russia has unleashed a devastating series of missile, drone, and rocket attacks across the breadth of Ukraine and vowed to continue, so much for Western hopes of building manufacturing plants in Ukraine to keep up the war effort.

Panic among Western analysts about Ukraine’s looming defeat has escalated. Robert Clark, writing in Britain’s Daily Telegraph, wailed his lament in an op-ed titled, Ukraine’s new year may end with a brutal Western betrayal.  Clark blames Western leaders for Ukraine’s debacle:  The mood in 2024 is very different.

The counter-offensive failed to deliver a decisive blow to Putin’s forces in the south. Russia’s economy has withstood Western sanctions, rapidly militarising, to provide an ongoing stream of munitions to the battlefront. Ukraine, meanwhile, is undergoing one of the largest aerial bombardments since the SMO began, and its united front is beginning to fray as conscription takes its toll.

To turn our backs now on the Ukrainian people, so swiftly after months of brutal fighting, is morally bankrupt and strategically negligent.  It is understandable, if not forgivable, that governments have begun questioning their levels of commitment to a deeply destructive war with no end in sight. At best there now appears to be a likely short to medium-term stalemate across much of the 1,000-kilometre front line.

Meanwhile, Western economies and budgets are still grappling with recovery from the scamdemic and last year’s energy shock. Global supply chains remain in flux, and as the Middle East escalates, the Houthis are increasingly able to dictate the terms of trade and passage in the Red Sea thus delivering another blow to a fragile global economy.

Clark, who served previously in the British Army, didn’t learn a damn thing during his time in Iraq and Afghanistan. He’s not fighting goat herders now.  Like many other delusional Western analysts, he insists the war is a stalemate.  Russia is out-producing Ukraine, and all the NATO countries, in tanks, artillery shells, and drones, and is reinforcing its standing Army at the rate of 42,000 recruits per month.

While Putin’s war machine is on a roll, Ukraine can’t even draft a workable plan to conscript more cannon fodder.  Colonel Jacque Baud, a Swiss officer in strategic intelligence, and a former head of the United Nations peace operations doctrine, does not suffer the analytical deficiencies of Clark.  Baud is the author of a new book, ‘The Russian Art of War: How the West Led Ukraine to Defeat’, and presents a detailed breakdown of Ukraine’s hopeless task. He summarizes the problem succinctly:

“The problem with the vast majority of our so-called military experts is their inability to understand the Russian approach to war. It is the result of an approach we have already seen in waves of terrorist attacks; the adversary is so stupidly demonised that we refrain from understanding his way of thinking. As a result, we are unable to develop strategies, articulate our forces, or even equip them for the realities of war. The corollary of this approach is that our frustrations are translated by unscrupulous media into a narrative that feeds hatred and increases our vulnerability. We are thus unable to find rational, effective solutions to the problem.”

The reason the Russians are winning in Ukraine is that they see the conflict as a process; whereas US/NATO see it as a series of disjointed actions. The Russians see events as a movie rather than a series of photographs. The Russians see a forest as opposed to focusing on the trees. US/NATO charts the start of the Ukraine conflict on February 24, 2022, and the start of the Palestinian conflict on October 7, 2023.

They ignore the historical context and wage wars in the moment much like children would act in a playground; this is why they lose wars.  They would do well to study Sun Tzu

AN EXTENDED M.E. WAR?  THE RED SEA and GAZA SITREP – Britain’s War News in Brief

The first shipment of British maritime aid to Gaza has arrived in Egypt, while Britain continues to supply military and diplomatic support to Israel. However, the ‘Senior Service’ of yesteryear is a hollowed-out shell in comparison; Britain no longer rules the waves.

“The Royal Navy has ships deployed around the globe 365 days a year, and 2024 will be no different, with tensions in the Red Sea, deployments to the Indo-Pacific, and Russian ships continuously needing to be shadowed; the Royal Navy needs to be at the top of its game.”  But what’s the game plan?

• What is the strength of the Royal Navy?  The Service has 29,220 full-time, trained personnel – as well as 2,730 reservist personnel. Apart from HMS Queen Elizabeth, the next in size order are the two Albion class vessels, HMS Albion and HMS Bulwark – tasked with delivering the punch of Royal Marines by land, sea, or air but they are about to be mothballed! There are only a measly six destroyers making up the backbone of the Royal Navy (for anti-aircraft and anti-missile warfare) and with 12 different small ship classes plus nine submarines, methinks Blighty’s bark is greater than its bite!  It’s a sad end to centuries of proud seafaring history.

• Foreign Secretary David Cameron spoke with his counterpart in Israel, Israel Katz, who thanked him for continuing support for their war against Hamas. Katz added that the pair discussed, “the importance of resolute opposition to South Africa’s absurd appeal to the ICJ against Israel”.

• Former Defence Secretary, Ben Wallace said that Israel’s “killing rage” in Gaza threatens its moral and legal authority and will fuel conflict for another 50 years.

• Yemen - Defence Secretary, Grant Shapps said that HMG would not hesitate to take “direct action” against Houthi militants in the Red Sea in response to their attacks on commercial vessels.

• Venezuela – Britain has deployed a gunboat to waters off the coast of Guyana in a show of support for the former British colony amid a territorial dispute with Venezuela over the Essequibo region.

• South Africa has filed a case at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) indicting Israel for its genocidal assault on Gaza, the submission noted, “Israel has engaged in, is engaging in, and risks further engaging in genocidal acts against the Palestinian people in Gaza”.

• Military Confrontation in the Red Sea and the Broader Middle East War?  The Drumbeat for Western Military Action against Yemen.  WAR ESCALATOR: “The Houthis will almost certainly ignore [the UK] warnings, and then the U.S. and its partners will feel compelled to back up their ill-advised threats by escalating [as of now]. When the first rounds of strikes achieve little or nothing, there will be predictable demands for more. Rather than acknowledge failure, the UK/US/EU will then press on with a bombing campaign that will kill many Yemenis without stopping Houthi attacks. That in turn would likely provoke more Houthi attacks on a wider range of targets. Instead of stabilising the region and ensuring safe passage for commercial vessels, this would have the opposite effect on both counts.”

BUT – Britain is a minnow on the global chessboard – they are punching above their weight and will likely suffer a knockdown.

STOP PRESS – THE EPSTEIN PAPERS

New court papers in Epstein’s sex-trafficking saga were released late last week but the high-profile perpetrators named in them are likely to escape unscathed.  The corrupt global financial system that created Epstein, (a failed teacher in another life), allowed him to prosper; he amassed a fortune of $700 million and continued to operate completely unchecked beyond effective scrutiny. And even at the level of exposing those individuals who exploited the young girls that Epstein supplied to them will most certainly simply escape unscathed.

Portions of many of the documents released this week are redacted, and only Epstein and Maxwell know the names of all the elites and celebrities who were involved in their debauched activities. Epstein has conveniently been ‘wasted’, and Maxwell has remained silent on this issue throughout her trial and incarceration; a wise move I suggest, given Epstein’s fate.

Media coverage of the Epstein saga in the West purports to be ‘investigative journalism’ but its defects disclose the real scandal, namely that genuine investigative journalism no longer exists in the West. Source

NEWS FLASH – MASSIVE FLOODS IN BRITAIN LAST WEEK!

More than 1,000 properties were flooded across England as residents were evacuated from their homes last week.  Hundreds of flood warnings and alerts remained in place last Friday, with the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) issuing a 'cold weather alert' updated Monday, January 8 and they aren’t kidding!

This week and next week will see massive sub-zero temperatures, snow, and ice, to thrash Britons already reeling from unconscionable cost of living increases compounded by mind-blowing heating costs – the most expensive in Europe. 

And in my county, Somerset  “Several flood alerts and warnings remain in place across Somerset today (January 6). A section of the A361, which links Taunton to Glastonbury, is also currently closed due to flooding.  The Environment Agency has issued four flood warnings and five flood alerts for the county. It comes after periods of heavy rain from Storm Henk over the last few days.”

Perhaps Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani suffered this malady after he called upon EU leaders to establish a ‘Common European Army’. Without a joint military, Tajani argues, the bloc cannot have a credible foreign policy. “If we want to be bearers of peace in the world, we need a European army,” Tajani told Italy’s La Stampa newspaper on Sunday. That’s a ‘tautological inconsistency’ – he needs to see a mental health professional – “Peace through War” - whatever next?

Is Britain in better shape than when the Tories came to power in 2010?  The Conservatives face “obliteration” at the next election after leaving the country in a worse state than they inherited in 2010, a senior Tory MP has said, in a stark assessment of the party’s 13 years in government.

Danny Kruger MP, a leading backbencher and founder of the increasingly influential ‘New Conservatives Group’, said the Conservatives risked being ejected from power this year having left the country, “sadder, less united and less conservative” than they found it.  Kruger said, “The narrative that the public has now firmly adopted, that over 13 years’ things have got worse, is one we just have to acknowledge and admit.”

Sunak is also likely to have to fight three difficult by-elections in Kingswood, Blackpool South, and Wellingborough – all of which Labour hopes to win.  And there is growing concern about the rise of Reform UK, the populist party originally established by Nigel Farage as a successor to the defunct UK Independence Party (UKIP), which was a Eurosceptic, right-wing populist political party in the UK, and was singularly responsible for the Brexit referendum in 2016.  Andrew Bridgen MP has something to say about the failures of HMG over the last 13 years.

ENERGY CONTROLS – DYSTOPIAN SMART METERS

Britain’s energy regulator has fined six suppliers a total of £10.8m for missing their targets for smart meter installation last year. British Gas, OVO, Bulb, E.ON, Scottish Power, and SSE all missed their rollout targets, leading to a shortfall of 1,026,628 smart meters, Ofgem has announced.

Would you fit a Smart Meter?  Here’s the Globalist regulator, Ofgem, with weasel words, “The installation of smart meters is a vital step in the modernisation of our energy system and the path to net zero by 2050. Smart meters give customers better information about their energy usage helping them budget and control their costs.”

If you believe this, I have a bridge to sell you!

Some suppliers did cite “mitigating factors” for missing their installation targets, some of which Ofgem considered when setting their payments into the EIVRF, but didn’t hold a detailed review into what went wrong!  You bet they didn't!  These smart beasts are designed to control individual energy consumption, cutting off supply as the energy suppliers dictate.  Many people understand this and are rejecting it.

Ofgem attempts to cap the cost of electricity based on average consumption rates. A typical household in Britain uses 2,700 kilowatt hours (kWh) of domestic electricity and 11,500 kWh of (heating) gas/oil per annum; here are my energy statistics from when I lived in the UK.  In South Africa, it’s 76% less than the UK at 3377 kWh per annum!

Ofgem announced last November that the average household bill will rise to £1,928pa from January 2024 as prices rise again this winter saying, "The increase is "driven almost entirely by rising costs in the international wholesale energy market due to market instability and global events, particularly the conflict in Ukraine."

I predict that in the end smart meters will be mandated – wait, watch, stay alert, and move out of the UK when you can because it not going to get any better.  I know I can't defeat a Goliath, even if David did by providential intervention, that’s why my Plan 'B' is in effect and I exited the Global North last month with a great sigh of relief.

SOUTH AFRICA – Building Back Better

“Let’s make ‘building South Africa’ our shared trend for 2024 and a better future”.  Take heart South Africans, we citizens do indeed have the ability to prevail over our terrible politicians who are no worse than those in the developed world.

Recently, the ‘Classical Association of South Africa’ was hosted by Professor Mary Beard. The title of her public lecture seemed apt for the times: “Order and Chaos: The Dystopian World of the Roman Emperor”. Beard is something of a “classics rock star” and her status is well deserved — her work is accessible but does not compromise scrupulous research and attention to detail.  The lecture provided entertaining and fascinating insights, taking the audience into the world of 218 AD, and the extreme excesses that marked a period of the Empire under the 14-year-old emperor Heliogabalus.

Predicting ‘what’s next’ for ‘South Africa Incorporated for 2024 presents several challenges but the trends on the country’s radar are, improving educational prospects, and then placing graduates into jobs in a bid to drive the economy forward.  In the meantime, South Africa is taking the initiative to defend the rights of all people. Multiple ‘Suspicious Activity Reports’ (SARs) in banks most likely led to the cancellation of customers' accounts recently but financial laws have little to say about the trigger for sudden and unexplained account cancellations. Reuters reported in 2022 that banks filed over 1.8 million SARs. This marked a 50% increase in two years.

This year, cancellations are expected to approach two million.  The New York Times examination of over 500 cases of customer account terminations by their banks showed the chaos and confusion that ensue when banks decide on their own to cut people off.
